Driveway Installation
Installing a gravel driveway involves clearing, grading, and compacting the ground, laying geotextile fabric for stability, and spreading multiple layers of crushed stone (typically 8–12 inches deep total). It requires proper drainage (sloping/crowning) and using angular stone that locks together, finished with a smaller top layer to prevent sinking.Step-by-Step Installation ProcessPlanning & Marking: Outline the area using stakes and string. Check local zoning regulations and obtain necessary permits.Excavation: Remove topsoil and organic material 6–12 inches deep to reach a stable base. This prevents the driveway from sinking later.Installing Drainage/Slope: Grade the area so it has a 2% slope (usually a crown in the middle, sloping to the sides) to direct water runoff away from the center, preventing erosion.Weed Barrier: Lay down a sturdy geotextile fabric (landscaping fabric) over the sub-base to prevent weeds and keep the gravel from mixing with the soil underneath.Sub-Base Layer (Base Rock): Fill the area with 3-4 inches of 3-to-4-inch angular rock or coarse pit-run gravel. This provides structural strength.Compaction (Base): Compact the base layer thoroughly using a plate compactor or heavy equipment (like a tractor or truck).Middle Layer: Add another 3-4 inches of intermediate-sized gravel, such as #53 or #4 crushed limestone. Compact it again.Surface Layer (Topcoat): Apply a final 1-2 inch layer of smaller 3/4-inch crushed, angular gravel to create a smooth, walkable surface.Final Compaction & Grading: Use a rake to level the gravel and a final pass with a compactor to lock the top layer in place.
