Backfill and Final Grade

Preparation and SafetyWait for Cure: Ensure foundation concrete has cured sufficiently (usually 7-10 days).Inspections: Obtain approval from local inspectors to cover walls.Protect Walls: Temporarily brace foundation walls to handle pressure.Waterproofing: Install waterproofing, insulation, and foundation drains.Step 2: Drainage Layer (Backfill Stage 1)Install Drain Pipe: Place footing drain (weeping tile) along the perimeter.Add Gravel: Cover the drain pipe and the first 1–2 feet of the foundation with 3/4-inch washed stone or gravel for optimal drainage.Step 3: Backfilling and Compaction (Backfill Stage 2)Select Material: Use clean fill dirt free of large rocks (over 3 inches), organic matter, or debris.Layering (Lifts): Place soil in 6-to-8-inch layers (lifts).Compact Each Lift: Compact every layer (95% density) before adding the next to minimize settling.Avoid Overstress: Don’t drive heavy machinery parallel to the foundation wall; work at angles.Step 4: Rough GradeSlope Away: Shape the soil to slope away from the foundation at minimum 0.5 inches per foot, or roughly 2-5% slope (roughly 6 inches down over 10 feet).Manage Downspouts: Extend gutters 5 to 10 feet away from the foundation.Step 5: Final GradeTopsoil Application: Apply 3–6 inches of topsoil over the rough grade.Final Slope Check: Ensure the grade allows water to flow away from the structure, not pool.Landscaping Preparation: Rake smooth for seeding or sodding, leaving 4-6 inches of foundation exposed above grade.
